Sign up now to make the most of Medicare

Bismarck, ND - Insurance Commissioner Adam W. Hamm today reminded seniors that open enrollment for Medicare Part D ends in two weeks on December 31, 2007.

"People interested in signing up for Medicare Part D or needing help with their existing plans should seek assistance now to make sure that their coverage starts on January 1, 2008," Hamm said.

Enrolling is an easy process. Beneficiaries have the following options:

• Visit Medicare's website or call Medicare toll-free at 1-800-633-4227; or
• Call State Health Insurance Counseling (SHIC) program at the North Dakota Insurance Department toll-free at 1-888-575-6611.

Hamm added, "Before switching plans or signing up, beneficiaries should consider the cost, coverage, and customer service of the plan."

Analysis of the 52 plans available for 2008 indicates that several companies significantly changed the benefits and costs of the plans. Under the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, companies are allowed to change the drugs covered, the premium price and the co-payments every year.

At any time during the process, anyone with questions or who needs assistance should call SHIC at 1-888-575-6611.
