Hamm reports $4.4 million recovered in 2014 for North Dakota consumers
BISMARCK, N.D.—North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Adam Hamm released the Insurance Department’s annual Consumer Assistance, Enforcement Action and Fraud Report today indicating almost $4.4 million was recovered or saved for North Dakotans in 2014.
This number represents money recovered on behalf of North Dakotans through the Insurance Department’s hotline, through complaints filed by consumers against insurance companies and agents, and through investigations performed by the Department. It also includes benefits received through the Department’s Prescription Connection (PC) and State Health Insurance Counseling (SHIC) programs.
“Consumer protection is always a top priority for this agency, and I want North Dakotans to know they can call us with any type of insurance issue, big or small,” Hamm said.
Also included in the report are statistics on fraud and consumer contacts. In 2014, the Department received a record high of 190 fraud referrals, totaling $831,466 in actual losses. The Department hotline handled 13,655 phone calls, helped 161 walk-in clients and processed 172 formal complaints. The Department also handled 9,694 SHIC and PC contacts.
The complete 2014 Consumer Assistance, Enforcement Action and Fraud Report can be found at www.nd.gov/ndins/Communications/studiesandreports/consumerassistance. Consumers are encouraged to contact the North Dakota Insurance Department at 1-800-247-0560 with questions.
