North Dakota Residents Urged to Double-Check Their Insurance Coverage During Get Smart Week

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Jim Poolman
January 8, 2002 701-328-2440

Bismarck, ND - When it comes to insurance, knowledge is your best policy. The North Dakota Department of Insurance and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) are encouraging consumers to get smart about their coverage during Get Smart Week, Jan. 14 - 18, 2002.

"Get Smart Week is an effort to make sure consumers have adequate coverage and understand what they are purchasing," says Commissioner Jim Poolman. "We believe the North Dakota Department of Insurance is the best resource for insurance-related questions and concerns. Get Smart Week is the perfect opportunity for us to connect with consumers and encourage them to get smart about their coverage."

Although most Americans feel they have about the right amount of coverage (67 percent), only 28 percent say they understand the details of the coverage "very well." During Get Smart week, North Dakota residents are encouraged to contact the Department at 1.800.247.0560. The NAIC is also sponsoring a national Get Smart Hotline toll free at 1-866-SMARTWEEK. In addition, the North Dakota Department of Insurance Web site features information specific to Get Smart Week, as well as a wide array of consumer information and frequently asked questions regarding all lines of insurance.

"Consumers today are challenged with so many different insurance products that are available," said Poolman. Get Smart Week isn't about selling or canceling policies, it's about making sure your family is properly covered; which can be difficult considering the unique insurance needs of North Dakotans."

During Get Smart Week the North Dakota Department of Insurance is telling consumers that selecting an insurance product should be taken seriously - as in making any major purchase. Each North Dakotan should investigate their options and remember it is the consumer's responsibility to watch out for their own best interests.

Other recommendations from the North Dakota Department of Insurance include:

  • Check with the North Dakota Insurance Department for free tips and up-to-date information prior to purchasing health, life, auto, home, or other insurance coverage.

  • Schedule a routine "check-up" with your insurance providers at least once a year.

  • Inquire about the cost benefit of opting for higher deductibles.

  • Ask specifically about discounts for good driving records, good health, good grades, special education, or training.

  • Shop around for identical products and services. Not every company charges the same rate.

  • Remember: an insurance policy is a legal document. Read it carefully.

"Our staff is a terrific source of unbiased information," Poolman added. "You may not have the coverage you need. You may have more than you need. You may feel you've been treated unfairly when shopping for insurance, or you may just want help understanding how different kinds of insurance work. No matter what your situation is, we are here to help you get smart about insurance."
