New Law Creates Pilot Program Affecting Security of Anhydrous Ammonia Nurse Tanks - Public hearing scheduled next week

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Jim Poolman
July 11, 2003 701-328-2440

BISMARCK, ND - Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem and Insurance Commissioner Jim Poolman will hold a public hearing next week in Williston.

SB 1352, which takes effect August 1, 2003, created the procedure to identify a "critical methamphetamine use zone" in the state and establish a pilot program to implement security measures for users and owners of anhydrous ammonia nurse tanks within that zone.

Williams County, and possibly adjoining counties, has been identified as a potential "critical" zone. Reports of theft of anhydrous ammonia and incidents of meth lab busts are increasing at a higher rate in that part of the state than in any other area. To date in 2003, there have been 203 meth lab busts across the state, compared to 275 for entire year in 2002. Williams County had 54 meth lab busts and McKenzie County had 12.

The public hearing will take place:

Date: ~ Friday July 18, 2003
Location: ~ El Rancho Motel, Williston
Time: ~ 9:00 AM

Farmers, dealers and other interested parties are encouraged to attend the meeting and share suggestions and ideas to assist in formulating the rules for the nurse tank pilot project.
