Meth Program Officials to Meet in Iowa

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Jim Poolman
May 26, 2004 701-328-2440

Bismarck, ND - Insurance Commissioner Jim Poolman and Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem are traveling to Iowa Thursday and Friday this week to meet with Black Hawk County law enforcement officials, members of a narcotics taskforce, and representatives of the Iowa Governor's Office of Drug Control Policy.

Iowa has had a successful anhydrous tank lock program in place for the past four years. Poolman and Stenehjem hope to learn all they can from the Iowa plan administrators to ensure that North Dakota's anhydrous tank lock pilot program is successful.

Stenehjem said, "We know Iowa's program has helped reduce the number of anhydrous thefts there, and we hope the effect will be the same in McKenzie and Williams counties." Poolman added, "Iowa's program started small like ours-it has now grown to encompass 29 counties. The program has made a real difference in Iowa's fight against meth."

"We are thrilled with the favorable response we have received from farmers and I want to thank them for their cooperation and assistance. I know that our partnership will help turn the tide on the meth problem," Poolman said. "If these locks work, then we owe it to our rural communities to at least try to stem this theft using these locks. It may be the easiest and least expensive option," Stenehjem said.
