Poolman: June Hailstorms in Dickinson and Walhalla to Exceed $18 million in Damage
June 28, 2005 701-328-2484

Bismarck, ND - North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Jim Poolman today reported that severe weather that ripped through the Dickinson area in Western North Dakota and the Langdon and Walhalla areas in Eastern North Dakota earlier this month has caused an estimated $18 million in damage to insured property.

As of Monday, early estimates from several major insurance carriers who write a majority of the auto, homeowners, and farm/ranch insurance market in North Dakota indicate that they have received over 4,500 claims. Many companies report that they have completed the adjustment of around 25% of the claims filed and expect to be finished assessing damage in the next few weeks. Many insurance companies have set up catastrophe teams in the Dickinson area.

Companies have been quick to respond with catastrophic claims teams that are evaluating damage to property and autos. Poolman said, "Most companies are probably pretty well done processing auto claims, but homeowners claims are another story because the evaluation requires an on-site inspection."

The survey of the major insurance companies doing business in the areas break out the claims as follows:

Dickinson area: An estimated number of claims of 4000 which will total over $14 million in insurable damage.

Langdon/Walhalla area: An estimated number of claims of 500 which will total over $4 million in damage.

A majority of the claims in the Dickinson area were homeowners' claims, with mild roof damage to many homes due to wind and hail. Almost all of the claims in the Langdon and Walhalla area were farm and ranch claims with damage to grain bins, storage sheds, and other farm property.

Poolman said, "It's really important for people to be patient during this process. Because the damages are extensive in these areas, the claims process could be slower for some people who have suffered minor damage. Companies always try to help those who have the most severe damage first."

"So far this summer there has been a lot of destructive weather," Poolman said. "These damage estimates are sure to rise on a statewide level as storms this week caused significant damage to other areas of North Dakota."

These figures do not include any damage to North Dakota crops. They are only to farms, ranches, homes, autos, and other personal property.
