Hamm urges North Dakotans to utilize free assistance programs
BISMARCK, N.D.-North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Adam Hamm launched a public awareness campaign today aiming to educate North Dakotans about the free help available for people on Medicare and for people who need help with prescription medications costs.

"These two programs can make a big difference for people dealing with Medicare and those struggling to pay for medications," Hamm said.

The North Dakota Insurance Department's State Health Insurance Counseling (SHIC) program offers free and confidential help with Medicare and other health insurance. Trained counselors across the state can help answer your questions over the phone or in person. The department's Prescription Connection program connects people of all ages with free and discounted prescription drugs.

As of July 2006, more than 103,000 North Dakotans were receiving Medicare benefits.

In 2007, SHIC and Prescription Connection together provided assistance to 13,362 North Dakotans, providing more than $4.8 million in free or discounted prescription drugs, cost-effective health and drug plans and assistance through low-income programs.
