Oversize Permit

A single trip oversize permit is required for a non-reducible oversize and overweight vehicle or load movement that exceeds North Dakota legal vehicle size and weight limits.  See the ND Legal Vehicle Size and Weight Guide and the ND Weight Limitations Chart for further information.

The online system (E-Permits) accepts single trip permit applications for oversize/overweight vehicles or load movements up to 18 feet in width, 15 feet 6 inches in height, 200 feet in length, and with a gross vehicle weight up to 150,000 pounds. The total number of axles cannot exceed nine.  Axle weights shall not exceed maximum permitted limits.  See the Permit Policy for Movement of Oversize and Overweight Vehicles and/or Loads for further information.

Permit requests that exceed the online dimensions must complete the Application for Single Trip Oversize/Overweight Permit (SFN 3529) or contact the Permits Section at (701) 328-2621. Permit requests that exceed 150,000 pounds gross vehicle weight must complete the Application for Single Trip Permit for Movement of Excessive Size/Weight (SFN 3535).  Permit applications can be submitted electronically to ndhppermits@nd.gov or faxed to (701) 328-1642.

Applications for oversize vehicle and load movements with a gross vehicle weight of 80,000 pounds or less that do not exceed 12 feet in width (with all other dimensions and axle weights being legal) will automatically be approved and submitted to your shopping cart (except during the spring thaw).  All other permit applications are submitted to the Permits Section for review. Upon approval the permit is electronically sent to your shopping cart.

A single trip permit is valid for one movement up to three days. Routes of travel are restricted by the Permit Bridge Load Limitations Map, Weight Limitations Map, and the NDDOT Travel Information Map. The travel information map shows road construction, load restrictions, road closures, and road conditions. Routes of travel are also restricted by vertical structures over the highway system.
