Salary and Benefits
The North Dakota Highway Patrol offers a competitive salary and an excellent benefit package.
SALARY
While attending the Highway Patrol Academy, Recruit Troopers
receive $2,900 per month. Room, board and training are provided
at no cost to the applicant.
The pay range for a trooper is $3,300 - $4,360 per month. After graduation from the Law Enforcement Training Academy, the salary will be $3,300 per month with annual salary increases provided on the basis of merit.
Each trooper is paid an unvouchered expense allowance of $170 per month after completing their Academy training.
EQUIPMENT
All uniforms and equipment required for performance of duty
are furnished by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
Officers are assigned a vehicle, which they take home.
RETIREMENT
Normal retirement age is 55 with ten years of service or
when you reach the Rule of 80, whichever happens first.
After you reach normal retirement age, you can retire anytime
with full benefits.
The Rule of 80 is your age plus years of service. You may count years of service while participating in the Highway Patrol Retirement Fund, Teachers Fund for Retirement and the Public Employees Retirement System towards years of service necessary to meet the Rule of 80.
Highway Patrol officers pay into Medicare but they do not pay into Social Security.
Officers contribute an amount equal to 6.3% of their monthly salary and the department contributes an amount equal to 20.7% of their monthly salary into the retirement system. Officers retiring with 25 years of service will receive approximately 90% of their final average salary.

240 hours of annual leave may be carried over from one year to the next.
Annual leave balance is paid upon termination.
SICK LEAVE
Sick leave accrues at a rate of 8 hours per month.
Sick leave may be used for illnesses where the employee is unable to work and for medical and dental appointments.
Employees may use up to 40 hours per year of their sick leave to tend to the needs of their child, spouse or parent who are ill or to assist them in obtaining medical services or other services related to their health or well-being.
Employees who have 10 continuous years of service are eligible to be paid for 10% of their sick leave hours upon termination of employment.
Employees may be eligible to give or receive donations of annual or sick leave in case of severe illness, injury or other circumstances.

Employees receive 10 paid holidays.

Employees who are assigned a regular day off on the above holidays are generally provided an alternate day off.
At the discretion of the Field Operations Commander, employees assigned to work a regular shift on the above holidays may receive either overtime at the rate of one and one-half times their hourly salary or comp time at the rate of one and one-half hours for each hour worked.
HEALTH INSURANCE
The department pays the premium for family health insurance
coverage
LIFE INSURANCE
The department pays the premium for a $100,000 life insurance,
accidental death and dismemberment policy for sworn officers.
The department pays the premium for $1,300 supplemental life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment policy. Additional coverage may be purchased on the employee and their dependents.
EMPLOYEES ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
Employee Assistance Program employees and their families
may receive assistance dealing with personal problems through
a designated provider. All assistance is confidential.
WORKERS COMPENSATION
Employees are protected by workers compensation against
loss of income due to accidental injury and/or death in
the performance of their duties.
LIABILITY PROTECTION
Liability protection is provided on all department vehicles
and aircraft.
Employees are defended by the state of North Dakota in any claim, demand, or action.
