The North Dakota Highway Patrol patch was redesigned in 2009, adding color to Red Tomahawk's profile. The previous shoulder patch was worn from 1950 to 2009.

The NDHP does not participate in patch sharing. The new patch is not available to the public; however, the previous patch is available for $10.00. The Patrol is affiliated with the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of North Dakota and all money collected from shoulder patches is used to grant the wishes of young children under the age of 18 who have life-threatening illnesses.
