The Advisory Committee on Sustainable Agriculture will meet at 12:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 14, in Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring’s office on the sixth floor of the State Capitol.
The committee was created by the 2009 Legislature to provide ideas and advice on developing a sustainability certification program and on the marketing and packaging of certified products. The new law (NDCC 4-01-23) calls for the implementation of a program to promote sustainably grown commodities in North Dakota. Producers who apply for certification must demonstrate that they use growing practices that meet the commissioner's established criteria for sustainability.
Members of the committee, appointed by Goehring, include William Bateman, producer, Grand Forks; Mike Keller, ADM, Enderlin, and Pat Bresnahan, Sinner Bros. & Bresnahan, Casselton. Statutory members include Sen. Terry Wanzek, Jamestown; Rep. Dennis Johnson, Devils Lake; interim Commerce Commissioner Paul Govig and Ken Grafton, director of the North Dakota State University Agricultural Experiment Station. Rep. Phil Mueller, Valley City, was appointed by the chairman of the Legislative Council.
