- Chapter 46-01-01 Organization of Department of Labor

- History. The 1965 legislative assembly established the department of labor. The department is headed by a commissioner of labor elected on the no-party ballot for a term of four years, with the first election being held in 1966. Prior to this time agriculture and labor were one department under the commissioner of agriculture and labor.
- Deputy commissioner of labor. The deputy commissioner is appointed by the commissioner and is responsible to the commissioner for administering labor laws.
- Regulations and enforcement concerning labor matters. Inquiries regarding wage payment, child labor, minimum wage, maximum hours, employment agencies, equal pay for equal work, discrimination because of age, race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, the presence of any mental or physical disability, or status with regard to marriage or public assistance, or participation in a lawful activity off the employer’s business premises during nonworking hours which is not in direct conflict with the essential business-related interests of the employer, and labor disputes may be addressed to the commissioner:
