Server Operating Systems

Purpose

To provide a secure, stable, robust, cost effective infrastructure for the hosting of network based services such as email, file and print, databases, applications and hosting.

Standard

  1. All new server hardware that will be used for new application infrastructure will be based upon the Intel/AMD CPU
  2. All server operating systems that will be used for new application infrastructure will be Microsoft Windows, Apple OS X Server, Redhat Enterprise Linux or Suse Enterprise Linux.
    1. The use of operating systems supported by Apple is limited to new application infrastructure that requires the usage of Xgrid.
  3. All operating system versions will be maintained at a level to ensure vendor support is available and critical security patches are provided.

Policy

Server hardware and operating systems will be consistent across the enterprise.

Applicability

This standard applies to all executive branch state agencies excluding the University Systems Office and other higher education institutions, i.e campuses and agricultural and research centers.

Definition

Server
A computer or device on a network that host software or provide computing resources to one or more end users over the network. Some examples of service provide by a server include database, file sharing, printer sharing, web hosting or application hosting.
New Application Infrastructure
New product or an existing product without a direct upgrade path from the existing version or vendor.

Non-Compliance

Non-compliance with this standard shall be reported to the Office of the State Auditor.
