Desktop Management

Desktop management is a comprehensive approach to managing all of the personal computers within an organization. Despite its name, desktop management also includes overseeing laptops and other computing devices.

Traditional desktop management tasks include installing and maintaining hardware and software, connecting network shares and printers, administering user permissions, and troubleshooting incidents. In recent years, an increasingly large proportion of administrative resources have been devoted to security-related tasks, such as patch management, anti-virus/spyware, and data encryption.

ITD offers agencies a variety of resources that IT coordinators can leverage when managing desktops.

  1. Windows Operating System Patching
  2. Microsoft Office Patching
  3. Anti-Virus/Spyware
  4. Personal Firewall
  5. Encryption
  6. Remote Access
  7. Directory Services
  8. Access and Authorization

1. Windows Operating System Patching

Windows Server Upgrade Service (WSUS) works with the public Microsoft Update website to give administrators more control over the hot-fixes and updates released to the computers within an organization. The cost of this service is built into the Technology Fee, and Configuring Windows Server Upgrade Service is automated via Active Directory Group Policies. Use ITD's online Work Management System (WMS) to submit a service request.

2. Microsoft Office Patching

The Windows Server Upgrade Service (WSUS) used to manage OS patching can optionally be extended to push hot-fixes and upgrades to the Microsoft Office suite. Use ITD's online Work Management System (WMS) to submit a service request.

3. Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware

Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware software is used to prevent, detect, and remove malware; including computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, spyware, and adware. ITD provides Symantec's Enterprise Endpoint Protection to state agencies as a component of their Technology Fee.

Political Subdivisions may leverage our enterprise license agreement with Symantec for Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware. Participation involves working with ITD to receive copies of the software and coordinating updates of virus definition files. A monthly license fee is assessed per client for political subdivisions. To request this service use ITD's online Work Management System (WMS) to submit a "Generic" service request.

4. Personal Firewall

A personal firewall (sometimes called a desktop firewall) is a software application to protect a single Internet-connected computer from intruders. A personal firewall works in the background at the device layer to protect the integrity of the system from malicious computer code by controlling Internet connections to-and-from the user's computer.

Symantec's Enterprise Endpoint Protection may be extended to provide Personal Firewalls.

5. Encryption

An Encryption standard was recently modified through the state's Enterprise Architecture process to require full-disk encryption of any portable computer containing confidential or sensitive data. ITD is evaluating a centrally managed service offering to assist agencies with compliance.

6. Remote Access

  • A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a software application that creates a secure connection between a public computer network and a private one. It is typically used on laptops or home computers to connect users to the state network.
  • ITD provides Dialup services for remote access to the statewide network. This service provides an authorized user a secured, encrypted link, from an off-site location to necessary computing resources within the state network. Use ITD's online Work Management System (WMS) to submit a "Dial-up Access" service request.

7. Directory Services

  • Active Directory is a Microsoft technology that unifies the management of users and IT resources. Use ITD's online Work Management System (WMS) to submit a "Windows Domain User ID" service request.
  • LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is used to manage application authentication/authorization of external users. Use ITD's online Work Management System (WMS) to submit a "LDAP Access" service request.

8. Access and Authorization

ITD manages access control to systems and datasets. To request access or authorization for a person, use ITD's online Work Management System (WMS) and select the appropriate service request:

  • AS/400
  • ConnectND
  • Dataset
  • FTP
  • Mainframe
  • Oracle

9. Vendor Pool Resources

ITD is not currently staffed to offer desktop professional services to agencies. However, the state's Vendor Pool Contract simplifies IT Procurement of private-sector resources.
