Virtual Private Network

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a secure way of connecting to a private network from a remote location via the Internet. The network supports client based VPN as well as dedicated or net-to-net VPN solutions.

Client VPN

Client based VPN is a software based solution that allows individual devices to securely connect to network resources.  A client based VPN uses authentication to allow authorized users access to resources via an encrypted session. VPNs of this type are frequently used by remote workers and contractors to access private data and network resources.

Specific Juniper SSL VPN Requirements apply.

Apple iOS Devices

Apple iPad, iPhone, and iTouch devices equipped with Junos Pulse (a free Apple iOS application) may securely connect to the state network. By default, all authorized VPN users can utilize this functionality via http://vpn.nd.gov/mode1/ipad.

Apple iOS VPN access may be disabled agency-wide at the discretion of each agency.  However, it cannot be managed on an individual user basis.

Dedicated VPN

A dedicated or net-to-net VPN is a hardware based solution that is utilized to allow for access to resources over a secure encrypted connection. These solutions are typically used to allow remote offices to access private date or network resources.

Requesting Service

Use ITD's online Work Management System (WMS) to submit a "Virtual Private Network" service request to obtain a Client based VPN.  For a net-to-net VPN solution submit a "Network" service request.
