Mainframe Migration Project

Project Update - 7/29/2008

Information Technology Department (ITD) contracted with Software AG in 2005 to migrate legacy computer software applications running on the mainframe computer to a more cost effective Linux based environment.

The project will come to completion when the final application will be migrated on August 9th.

The final phase (phase 3b) will consist of the Highway Patrol applications. It was the decision of ITD and the Department of Transportation (DOT) to hold off on migrating DOT applications at this time. The Department of Transportation plans to request funding to re-write many of the applications originally selected in this migration project. If the funds are approved, the work to migrate them off the mainframe would require a substantial amount of effort from DOT staff testing the migrated applications. Another reason for the decision was the migration of some of the applications would require ITD to setup a new computer environment that would be used only by the DOT. The original plan of phase 3b also included the migration of a few applications from State Radio. This will not occur because of the integration necessary with the DOT applications which will reside on the mainframe. The integration will be simpler and more efficient if both are on the same platform.

Many hours of work were invested in this project over the last 3 years from agency staff, Software AG staff and ITD staff. I would like to thank everyone for these efforts and the continued commitment to keeping the State of ND's essential computer systems operational and affordable.
