HRMS holds HR Contacts Meeting
HRMS held a HR contacts meeting on October 25, 2011. We are very appreciative of the ND Health Department for providing a webcast of the meeting and editing the content so it could be viewed into shorter, separate segments. Please feel free to review the materials and archived videos for each training session at your convenience.
For additional information on any of the issues addressed at the HR Contacts meeting or if you have suggestions for future meetings, please feel free to contact your HRMS contact.

Spotlight on Training - Taming the Dragons
The holiday season has passed us. There’s nothing like stress this time of year; money runs short as we pay for all of those Christmas presents, winter storms loom each week, and it’s time to begin spinning up the tax returns!
In the course, “Taming the Dragons”, we explore stress and time management. We say “Dragons” because we have some internal dragons that are about to bite us. We believe that Time Management and Stress Management are very closely related – if one of those might be “out of sync”, there’s a fair chance the other one is not far behind. To keep these ‘dragons’ at bay we help participants find their dragons and ways to begin limiting their effects.
We take a look at what stress is; what its symptoms are; identify personality factors that can influence our tendencies towards stress; and help you develop a stress management plan. We then take a look at the issues of time; self-discover your time management style; learn the symptoms of ineffective time management; and learn the “Golden Rules” of time management.
We all experience stress; and perhaps this course might give you some ideas on how you can better manage your “Dragon” before too many of them catch up to you!
Hiring Council
The Hiring Council will be meeting on the third Wednesday of every month. Please try to have your requests to HRMS at least a couple days before the meeting.
State Government Internship Stipend Program
HRMS received $200,000 in general fund authority for the 2011-13 biennium to continue the State Government Student Internship Stipend Program. All Executive Branch agencies, except higher education, are invited to participate in this educational program. We estimate hiring at least ten interns the first year and 20 the second year at approximately $10 per hour. We are asking agencies to fund 50 percent of the intern’s salary, if possible, to help stretch the dollars.
When hiring interns from North Dakota’s colleges, universities, and vocational/technical institutions, the employer benefits extensively:
- Students from the educational arena can provide fresh ideas and viewpoints, along with unique skills, which can be stimulating and reinvigorating to the workplace.
- Job recruitment is an ongoing process - whether you’re looking for someone to fill in for a regular employee who has been deployed or is on extended leave or you're looking for someone to replace the baby boomer approaching retirement. One big advantage to hiring an intern is that the employer has the opportunity to evaluate the perspective employee for a reasonable length of time before making a firm commitment. And once hired, the student can “hit the ground running.”
If your agency is interested in advertising for an intern and receiving funding, you are welcome to place your internship position on our Vacancy Index. As applications come in to our office, HR Officer Teresa Bauer will do an initial screening and then forward the applications to the agency for further review. You will also need to complete an Internship Work Plan. For more information, please refer to the State Government Student Internship Program. You may also contact Teresa Bauer at tebauer@nd.gov or 328-1016.
