Job Seekers: Internship Program

The internship is a learning experience, fundamentally to provide a situation in which students can see and experience the practical side of what they've been learning in the classroom and to fulfill an academic requirement. New skills and abilities often are broadened. Interns also get to explore sound career options based on the opportunities available. Human Resource Management Services (HRMS) administers and promotes an internship program for state government in collaboration with state agencies and North Dakota state colleges and universities. The program is unique in that there are many advantages and rewarding benefits to participants - students, hiring agencies, and educational institutions alike. Students qualifying for an internship must be seeking experience to fulfill an academic requirement through an educational institution accredited through the U.S. Department of Education.

Internship opportunities can occur in a variety of ways. Agencies may approach schools and students in order to recruit interns; students or advisors may wish to contact particular state agencies directly for an internship placement; or in other cases students may contact HRMS for assistance in attaining an intership.

When an internship position announcement is received by Human Resource Management Services from a hiring agency, the information may be posted on the Job Vacancy Index and is forwarded to the placement offices of the State's institutions of higher learning.

Students in search of an internship placement may contact Human Resource Management Services directly. HRMS aids students by offering guidance and assistance with the intricacies of the internship as well as forwarding the student information to several state agencies or specific agencies that may provide a possible match. It is helpful for students to have a current resume and letter of application stating the details of the internship being requested prior to contacting HRMS. Before an internship commences, a work plan will be set up and agreed to by all participants - the student, the hiring agency and the college or university involved. Such a document is usually designed to detail the student's goals, activities, outcomes, evaluation processes, compensation, and the time frame of the internship, which may be decided mutually based on the criteria established. Hiring agencies offering internships would generally provide work projects that are appropriate, challenging, and satisfying to students.

The State of North Dakota does not provide Sponsorships for internships.
