Minimum Qualifications:
Requires a high school diploma or GED.
Employee hired must have a valid Class
B driver’s permit with
air brakes with a cargo tanker endorsement the first day of work. The
employee will then have 30 calendar days to take the behind-the-wheel
exam and get the class B driver’s license with air brakes and
with a cargo-tank endorsement. The district will make the equipment
available for the employee to practice driving during these 30 days.
Prior to the completion of the probationary period, the employee must
have possession of a Class A driver’s license with air brakes
and with a cargo-tanker endorsement.
Requires normal vision and hearing range, with or without correction;
eye-hand coordination; ability to communicate clearly to avoid confusion
and misunderstanding with others; ability to remain calm and composed
when dealing with distraught or angry people; ability to read, interpret,
or explain applicable standards, technical literature, regulations,
plans, and specifications; ability to accurately and clearly complete
required paperwork.
Ability to work closely with people; demonstrated ability to establish
and maintain effective working relationships with associates and others.
Use of phone, reference sources, personal computer; physical mobility,
agility, and mental alertness compatibly with an office setting.
Requires flexibility in daily schedule; ability to work under stress;
to remain calm and maintain focus under demanding and often conflicting
work schedule with rapid shifts in priority; regular attendance is
essential to efficiently process the volume of work in this position.
Successful applicant must reside within 15 minutes travel time to
the section building within 30 days from the date of hire.
Requires satisfactory completion of the interview process and a verifiable
record of satisfactory performance in previous employment.
Employment is contingent upon successful passing of the
medical screening process.

This position is a safety-sensitive
position. An employee,

Summary
of Work:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
-
Highway and Roadway Maintenance: operate equipment
to perform required maintenance duties, for example, tractors, trucks,
rollers, pulverizers, and blade/motor grader; perform highway maintenance
duties. This includes, but is not limited to, hand patching, crack
pouring/sealing, erosion repair, roadway sealing, mowing, cleaning
culverts, guardrail and sign repair, minor structure repair, concrete
repair, asphalt repair, fence repair, flagging and work zone signing,
and assisting with mini mack operations; perform basic snow and ice
control/removal on secondary roads, generally during daylight hours.
With training and more direct supervision will advance to utilizing
more complex equipment on a variety of roads and weather conditions;
receive training and instruction in the operation of more complex
equipment, under direct supervision; assist in installing, repairing,
and maintaining highway signs and rest areas. Operate power tools
and other equipment to complete sign work. Approximately 55 percent
of time is spent on this duty.
Requires: ability to
function with minimal supervision & sitting.

Equipment and Vehicle Maintenance: perform minor
preventive and repair maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Approximately
5 percent of time is spent on this duty.

Record Keeping: maintain necessary paperwork,
including time records, activity reporting, daily diary, road reports,
etc. Approximately 10 percent of time is spent on this duty.
Requires: keyboard familiarity.

Highway Construction Project Duties: receive
training and perform the following construction project duties
under close supervision: materials testing, construction surveys,
and minor construction inspections; receive training on documentation
requirements, including diaries, and inspection reports. Approximately
10 percent of time is spent on this duty.
Requires: use of survey and lab equipment; use of engineering/construction
related software and survey software.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
-
Building and Grounds Maintenance: perform
building and ground maintenance duties, such as shovel snow,
mow and water grass, maintain fuel pumps, painting, basic carpentry,
plumbing tasks, clean shop floors and work area, clean
up shop grounds, minor building repairs, and maintain a safe
working environment; maintenance of radio tower grounds and buildings.
Approximately 15 percent of time is spent on this duty.

Information Technology Equipment Maintenance: perform
general routine maintenance of the Information Technology Division's
roadway and radio system equipment, including cleaning of lenses
of roadway weather information equipment. Approximately 5 percent
of time is spent on this duty.
Duties 1 & 2
require: drivers
license to travel to public meetings and project locations.
Duties 1 & 4 require: ability to express
ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing in normal
and stressful conditions; use of construction equipment; traffic
and machinery hazards may be present or may occur, safety training
provided; physical mobility, agility, and mental alertness compatibly
with construction project setting; requires walking; knowledge of
practices, principles, standards and guidelines as related to Highway
Maintenance and Highway Construction; requires work after hours,
on weekends, and holidays during road and weather emergencies is
required; use of two-way radio.
Duties 2 & 4 require: standing.
Duties 2 & 5 require: physical mobility,
agility, and mental alertness compatibly with maintenance/shop setting.
Duties 1, 3, & 4 require: use of calculator.
Duties 1, 4, & 5 require: work in all
types of weather on a variety of uneven or slippery surfaces.
Duties 3, 4, & 6 require: use of word
processing software.
Duties 1, 2, 4, & 5 require: ability
to lift 75 pounds.
Duties 2, 3, 4, & 6 require: use of technical
software.
