Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a high school diploma or GED and two years of work experience in corrections, security, law enforcement, military police, or two years of college coursework.

If unable to find qualified applicants, we will consider underfilling as a Corrections Trainee, with a salary of $1950 per month. Minimum qualifications require a high school diploma or GED. Preference will be given to individuals who have previous experience working in a correctional setting, as a peace officer, or have a military police background. Individuals must be able to successfully complete required basic correspondence courses and institutional cross training programs.

Individual must be flexible and innovative in carrying out assigned responsibilities.  Must successfully complete standard background and criminal record check.

Summary of Work:

Responsible for performing security duties in the maintenance of care, custody and control of inmate residents at the James River Correctional Center.  Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Supervision of resident movement within the facility and local community;
  • Enforcing rules of conduct as they relate to security, leisure and work standards by informal resolution or written report;
  • Complete verbal and written reports to supervisors regarding inmate behavior, rule violation, work and repair orders, security issues, and transportation of inmates.
  • Monitoring and reporting of inmate activities;
  • Training of inmate residents and assisting them in the rehabilitative process, through development and implementation of individual performance plans; serve as role model for inmates
  • Maintenance of safety and sanitation guidelines and support of institutional objectives;
  • Participate in searches of inmates’ cell, body (clothed and unclothed), property and work area to ensure control of contraband and compliance with institutional health standards.
  • Conduct inmate counts at designated times in assigned unit to ensure security and early detection of escapees.
  • Transport inmates to medical appointments out of the facility, etc. apply restraints and maintain custody.
  • Cross trained to work in all housing units.
