Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in crop or range science, general agriculture with a concentration in crop or range science courses, or closely related plant science field.
- Three years professional-level work experience related to the position.
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
If unable to find qualified applicants, will consider underfilling as an Environmental Scientist II, which requires a bachelor’s degree in crop or range science, general agriculture with a concentration in crop or range science courses, or closely related science field and at least one year of related work experience. (Salary range $3227-$4600/month)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in sampling crop production/forage using statistically valid methods.
- Working knowledge of MS Office applications and other computer applications, including GIS, used to evaluate and manage environmental resource information.

Summary of Work:
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Perform timely reviews of applications for mining permits, revisions, renewals, and bond releases to ensure regulatory requirements are met.
- Conduct detailed reviews of vegetation and land use data and reclamation and revegetation plans provided in applications for technical adequacy.
- Conduct field inspections of surface coal mines to determine if mining and reclamation operations comply with current laws, rules, and policies.
- Prepare clearly written inspection reports and deficiencies and technical issues noted in applications.
- Develop and maintain a good working knowledge of software applications used in the technical review of mining permit and revision applications.
- Use and add data to the Reclamation Division’s Geographic Information System (GIS) for storing and managing mining and reclamation information on file within the division.
- Suggest and comment on proposed rules and policies related to the vegetation aspects of the mining and reclamation regulatory program.
- Other duties as assigned.
Must have, or obtain within 30 days of employment, a valid North Dakota drivers license to travel to mine sites. Position works in an office and mine setting in all types of weather on a variety of uneven or slippery surfaces.
