Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a bachelor’s degree with a major in accounting or minimum of 21 accounting credits with additional course work in finance, computer science, economics or management and at least three years professional experience conducting audits and/or examinations of insurance companies. Requires SOFE certification as Certified Financial Examiner. Requires extensive written and verbal communication skills. Requires excellent computer skills and knowledge of electronic audit software along with the ability to manage and train junior examiners.

Summary of Work:

Work involves conducting examinations of multi-state insurance companies to determine their financial condition and adherence to applicable laws and regulations. Supervise and review the work of other examiners. Interpret and apply North Dakota insurance laws and rules; identify areas of insurer compliance and noncompliance with statutory requirements. Assist in the development and implementation of department policies and procedures; modify or implement standards to ensure that the Department will maintain accreditation with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Accreditation Program. Coordinate joint examination activities with other state counterparts. Conduct special investigations of troubled insurance companies; recommend enforcement actions to the Chief Examiner or Commissioner.

Domestic insurance companies include nationally significant insurers and members of large holding company groups such as WR Berkley, Berkshire Hathaway, Aspen and XL Capital. The position reports to the Chief Examiner and requires extensive in-state and out-of-state travel. Locations include New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Scottsdale and Stamford, Connecticut.
