Computer Security in the Workplace
Course Contents
Using the Internet and E-mail at Work:
- Monitoring Internet use: Employer's legal right to monitor all activity on any Internet access it provides.
- Personal Use: Internet access at work is a business connection. Some personal use may be permitted by some employers, but excessive personal Internet use may result in restrictions on use, discipline, dismissal. Logging on, goofing off: No place on the job for games, fantasy-athletic-teams, sports.
- "Off limits" at work: Sites that offer sexual material or defame race, gender, religion, or other protected classes.
- Flooding workplace systems with animated graphic files, video clips, games, movies, photo albums, streaming media, on-line music, news and sports events, chain letters, jokes, creates a burden on resources of the State of North Dakota.
- Information security: Care with what is sent and who it's sent to; Wasting work time in news groups, bulletin boards, chat rooms; Encryption of files; Downloading documents and executable files attached to e-mail from unknown outsiders.
- Hours submitted for billing as work hours, but spent on personal Internet use, may constitute time-card fraud.
- Web-based activity for an outside business entity, not to be conducted on the job.
- Illegal activity: Identify theft, copyright infringement, Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.
Security Awareness:
- You will learn about a tutorial designed to educate the State of North Dakota on the issues of information and technology security. Included are terms you might need to know, your responsibilities, vulnerabilities to be aware of, and the knowledge you need to help protect our information and technology resources.
