WEIGHTS AND MEASURES INSPECTOR (5250-1)
Scope of Work:
Work involves testing and inspecting the design, installation, operation, and tolerance of weight and measurement devices used in commercial operations.
Duties Performed at all Levels:
- Test and certify the accuracy of various scales and meters used in commerce, such as grocery store scales, gasoline pump meters, grain elevator scales, truck scales, etc.
- Approve and reject weight and measurement devices.
- Complete records of all tests and inspections.
- Conduct quality control inspections on registered service persons.
- Operate and maintain equipment, tools, and devices used for inspections.
- Interpret, apply, and enforce applicable state laws and regulations.
- Participate in a cross training program of division staff.
- Operate tools, devices, and specially equipped vehicles used in conducting inspections at a variety of sites within the state.
- Maintain an acceptable driving record.

WEIGHTS AND MEASURES INSPECTOR I (5250)
Grade 7
Level Definition:
Work at this level involves performing testing and inspections of large scales and/or small scales and meters used in commerce in North Dakota.
Additional Duties Performed at this Level:
- None
Minimum Qualifications:
Requires an associate degree in a technical or science-related field and two years of related work experience; OR a high school diploma or GED and five years of related work experience; OR a high school diploma or GED and two years of direct weights and measures inspection experience. Must also have a valid North Dakota driver license and acceptable driving record. The large scale inspector position also requires a North Dakota Class B driver license.
WEIGHTS AND MEASURES INSPECTOR II (PROGRAM COORDINATOR) (5251)
Grade 9
Level Definition:
Work at this level involves serving as a lead worker and assisting with the coordination of the weights and measures program.
Additional Duties Performed at this Level:
- Coordinate the operations of the weights and measures field staff; evaluate work product via reports and field observations.
- Interpret and enforce metrology state laws and rules.
- Conduct testing of persons applying to be a registration service person.
- Provide technical and field training for weights and measures staff and members of the industry; coordinate safety and technical training with outside sources.
- Investigate consumer complaints.
- Educate commercial device operators and the public regarding device operation, maintenance, and repair, and on federal and state weights and measures regulations.
- Maintain records and reports documenting inspection program performance.
- Assist the division director in accomplishing goals and evaluating staff performance.
- Advise the division director and staff on matters pertaining to the division, e.g. legislative bills, rulemaking, Procedures and Enforcement Guide, variance applications, complaints, registered service person test reports, and maintenance and replacement of tools and equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:
Requires an associate degree in a technical or science-related field and three years of weights and measures inspection work experience; OR a high school diploma or GED and five years of weights and measures inspection work experience, OR a bachelor’s degree and one year of weights and measures inspection work experience. Must also have a valid North Dakota driver license and acceptable driving record. The large scale inspector position requires a North Dakota Class B driver license.
