HEALTH CARE ORDERLY (3015-3016)

SCOPE OF WORK:

Individuals in positions assigned this classification provide assistance to patients/residents and senior staff members of a state health care facility by providing routine patient care and treatment, departmental and equipment maintenance, and record keeping.

DUTIES PERFORMED AT ALL LEVELS:

  • Prepare patients/residents for and assist with examinations, evaluations, and treatments.
  • Perform routine record keeping activities such as fluid intake and output, pulse and respiration rate, temperature, etc.; report any abnormal readings.
  • Assist patients/residents in performing routine daily living activities such as bathing, shaving, dressing, etc.
  • Transport patients/residents to treatment or evaluation areas such as operating, x-ray, or therapy rooms; accompany patients/residents to appointments at outside facilities.
  • Assist patients/residents in the use of appliances such as wheelchairs, walkers, braces, etc.
  • Clean, set up, and maintain equipment used during evaluations and/or treatments.
  • Carry meal trays to patients/residents and feed patients/residents unable to feed themselves.
  • Lift patients/residents on and off beds.
  • Make beds and collect soiled linens.
  • Maintain, collect, and distribute supplies within the work unit.
  • Assist in the general maintenance of the work area.

HEALTH CARE ORDERLY I (3015)

Grade 3

LEVEL DEFINITION:

Duties are performed in a training capacity within the assigned work area under the close supervision of a Health Care Orderly II and/or nursing and medical staff.

Additional duties performed at this level:

  • None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Requires a high school diploma or GED.

CLASS EVALUATION:

Technical Knowledge

  • Requires knowledge of processes, procedures, or methods.
  • Requires some specialized knowledge, skill, and ability.
  • Requires a high school diploma or GED, some on the job training.

Management Breadth

  • The requirement for managing others does not exist.

Interpersonal Skills

  • Requires the use of common courtesy in everyday contacts with employees, clients, and the general public.

Guidelines

  • Specific guidelines are provided.
  • Guidelines are worded in general terms.
  • Employee must apply appropriate guideline to appropriate duty.

Mental Challenge

  • Specific duties are clearly defined.
  • General procedures are provided for performing duties.
  • Work procedures may require minor changes when duties are repeated.

HEALTH CARE ORDERLY II (3016)

Grade 5

LEVEL DEFINITION:

Individuals at this level have obtained a working knowledge of routine patient care procedures and have demonstrated the ability to perform assigned tasks. Duties are performed within the assigned work area under the general supervision of nursing and medical staff.

  • May assist senior staff members in assigning and monitoring the work activities of Health Care Orderly I’s
  • May assist in training new health care employees and/or volunteers.
  • May function as a lead-worker within an assigned work area.

The appointing authority shall establish a specific additional type and amount of experience required when recruiting at this level.
