Readers can share in the history and culture of the state and the Northern Plains through the Society's quarterly historical publication, North Dakota History: Journal of the Northern Plains, which features well-illustrated, fascinating articles by historians and writers. Recent issues have included interviews with former governors John Davis, William Guy, and Arthur Link, an article about the claim of Joseph DeSomet Lewis to be the son of Meriwether Lewis and a Teton Sioux woman, and an account of the concert tours of John Philip Sousa in North Dakota. Begun as the North Dakota Historical Quarterly, the journal has published the scholarship and writings of hundreds of authors since 1926. In 2000, a valuable research tool, an index of all articles and reviews that appeared in North Dakota History between 1945 and 1998, was published by the Society. Members of the State Historical Society of North Dakota Foundation receive North Dakota History and Plains Talk as a benefit of membership. Contact the Museum Store for information on current and back issues.
The Society also produces newsletters for its various constituents. Plains Talk is a quarterly newsletter sent to all the members of the State Historical Society of North Dakota Foundation, describing the work of the Society, sharing information about people, places, and programs. Our nearly 200 volunteers receive a quarterly newsletter, Volunteer Voices, that shares news about ongoing programs and the countless contributions of the wonderful people who augment the work of the paid staff of the Society. The 104 local historical societies across the state receive The Local Network, a newsletter which facilitates the sharing of expertise and know-how among the various locals and from the Society to them.
Recent book-length publications of the Society include North Dakota History: Journal of the Northern Plains Cumulative Index, 1945-1998, The Centennial Anthology of North Dakota History, A Traveler's Companion to North Dakota State Historic Sites, Aristocracy on the Western Frontier: The Legacy of the Marquis de Mores, The Career of the Marquis de Mores in the Badlands of North Dakota, A Visitor's Guide to the North Dakota Capitol Grounds, and a collection of black-and-white photographs of North Dakota, Every Place With a Name.
