NORTH DAKOTA AUTHOR CARLA KELLY TO SPEAK AT
FORT BUFORD HISTORY BOOK CLUB MEETING APRIL 6

WILLISTON – North Dakota Author Carla Kelly will deliver a special presentation on her book, “Here’s to the Ladies: Stories of the Frontier Army,” at Fort Buford State Historic Site Sunday, April 6, beginning at 2 p.m.  Following Kelly’s presentation, guests are encouraged to partake in a question and answer session with the author.  Additionally, Kelly will be available to sign books following her presentation.  The meeting is free and free refreshments will be served.

The presentation is part of the Fort Buford History Book Club’s monthly meeting.  In recognition of “Women’s History Month” (March), the History Book Club read Kelly’s book that focuses on the lives of women who were associated with the frontier army of the late 19th Century.  Although it is not necessary to read the book to enjoy the presentation, it is encouraged.  The book can be purchased at the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center (701) 572-9034 or shsbuford@nd.gov or Books on Broadway in Williston at (701) 572-1433 or bksbdwy@nemontel.net.

Kelly is a North Dakota resident and the author of more than 40 short stories and books.  She has served for numerous years as a park ranger at the Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site.  Former Chief Historian for the National Park Service Robert Utley had this to say about Kelly’s work: “Carla Kelly knows the history of the frontier army, and she knows how to craft delightful stories.  ‘Here’s to the Ladies’ is good history, and a good read.”

The Fort Buford History Book Club was organized by the Fort Buford State Historic Site in cooperation and assistance from Books on Broadway in Williston.  Each month the club reads a different book dealing with the history of the region and then meets at the Fort Buford State Historic Site to discuss the book.  Along with the book discussions, there will occasionally be presentations by scholars in the chosen book’s field of study.  These scholars will provide additional insight and help readers understand the historical context of the book.
