Guidelines for Authors on Submitting a Manuscript for Consideration for North Dakota History

Send one hard copy and an IBM-compatible disk copy (WordPerfect 6/7/8/9 or higher). Please send your copy in double-spaced format, using one-inch margins on each side, and double-spacing any quotes and the endnotes. Citations must be complete and should use the Chicago Manual of Style (14th edition, 1993) published by the University of Chicago Press. Manuscripts are reviewed anonymously by two or more among the publications staff, staff of the society, members of the journal's editorial board, and other scholars who are knowledgeable in the manuscripts' subjects. This is a double-blind process--neither the author's identity nor the reviewers' are revealed to one another. Please identify the author and give any other information about the author only on the cover page, not in the manuscript.

The editorial staff and editorial board welcome new topics and new treatments about North Dakota or northern plains history, institutional history, archeology, architecture, historic preservation, or ethnic history. Edited, annotated documents and other unpublished primary materials about the state's history and that of the northern plains also are welcome. Ordinarily, personal reminiscences and genealogical studies are not considered for publication in this journal. Previously published articles and manuscripts that are being considered for publication elsewhere will not be accepted.

Editorial review typically takes three to six months following receipt of a manuscript. The editor will write to the author, summarizing reviewers' comments as applicable and asking for any suggested or required revisions. Once the accepted, finished manuscript is submitted, the author will be asked to sign a copyright release for the article. The agreement transfers copyright to the State Historical Society of North Dakota. In the agreement, the author guarantees that the work is original, not previously published. Before editing and publication can take place, the author also must acquire permission to publish all copyrighted materials (quotes, photos, maps, archival materials) that are part of the author's article but not original with the author. The author is responsible for reproduction or permission fees for figures, maps, photos, or other attachments that are part of the submitted article. Full and proper credit for use of archival and copyrighted works is part of the rights and permission process as well.
