Carrying Cultures into the Future

"The Museum and Education Division collects, preserves, manages, and exhibits artifactual materials that are representative of or possess exceptional importance to the interpretation of the history and prehistory of the area now known as North Dakota in order to create a greater awareness and understanding of the past for all people." (State Historical Board - Museum Policy)

The State Historical Society of North Dakota has operated since 1895 as the state's department of history, archeology, museums, and archives. Four divisions handle the Society's various programs. The Museum and Education Division manages the state's material culture (things) collections and produces exhibits and educational programming. We are the State's attic, storing and taking care of treasures from the past, using those artifacts in exhibits, and facilitating research.
