North Dakotans bid a fond and colorful farewell to the replica of the Sakakawea statue in September 29, 2003, ceremonies in Bismarck, two days before her departure for final placement in the U.S. Capitol’s National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C. October 16. The original bronze statue, dedicated October 13, 1910, stands two hundred yards from this site.

300 schoolchildren attended the sendoff event, and formed a line to touch the statue at the end of the ceremony
