What We Do:

Survey - physically examine areas of North Dakota to find historical, architectural, and archeological properties for research purposes and for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. National Register - nominate significant historical, architectural, and archeological properties to the National Register of Historic Places, evaluate eligibility of properties, and assist the public in writing nominations.

Protection - advocate the protection of known historical, architectural, and archeological properties.

Review & Compliance (Section 106) - review all projects undertaken with federal involvement and provide comment on any impact those projects may have on significant historical, architectural, and archeological properties.

Research - research documents to find information about specific themes in North Dakota history as they relate to historical, architectural, and archeological properties; archeological excavation and testing to gain more information about sites.

Development - provide funds for the restoration, stabilization, or rehabilitation of National Register-listed historical, architectural, and archeological properties. [Examples of Historic Rehabilitation Projects]

Tax Incentives - assist owners of commercial properties with a federal program that provides a tax credit for rehabilitating a National Register-listed property.

CLG (Certified Local Governments) - assist local governments in establishing a certified program, award grants funds, and provide technical assistance to certified programs. (CLGs share the responsibility for historic preservation with the state and are eligible for a share of federal historic preservation grant monies.)

Education - educate the public on the importance of historic preservation and the programs that are available. Brochures, workshops, presentations, classes, exhibits, and other methods are used.

Technical Assistance - provide assistance in restoring, evaluating, or rehabilitating historic properties, writing National Register nominations, locating historic properties, determining what properties are listed in the National Register, researching historical, architectural, and archeological themes, understanding state and federal historic preservation regulations, determining an applicant's eligibility for programs, etc. Information on National Park Service cultural resources technical assistance.
