Showing identification is not new to North Dakotans, but showing ID to vote is. The law change is intended to help election officials ensure voters they are voting in the correct location and where their voice matters most: Where they live! Acceptable forms of ID must be valid and include the name and residential address of the person offering to vote. Post Office Boxes cannot be accepted. For a list of acceptable ID's, click on Voter ID's. (17kb pdf)
For information on getting a state issued ID card, click on State ID.
If you do not have an acceptable ID, you will not be denied the right to vote. If a poll worker knows you and knows you are a qualified elector of that precinct, that poll worker can vouch for you by signing a "Poll Worker Verification Form" and then you may vote. If no one knows you well enough to be certain you are a qualified elector of that precinct, you may fill out and sign a "Votes Affidavit," which is a legal document that states you are qualified to vote in that precinct. To view a copy of the affidavit form, click on Voter Affidavit.
