Election Equipment
![]() |
Every polling site in each of North Dakota's 53 counties now uses the same election equipment. Whether you vote in Richland or Divide County, Pembina or Bowman County, or anywhere in between, every polling site will offer the same voting options. The state of North Dakota uses the Model 100 Optical Scanner (used to count votes on ballots as they are deposited into the ballot box) and the AutoMARK ballot-marking device (which allows voters to mark their paper ballots privately and independently, regardless of their ability to read the ballot or use a pen to fill in the ovals on the ballot). North Dakota's election equipment is supplied by Election Systems and Software (ES&S) of Omaha, Nebraska.
All voters in North Dakota receive paper ballots when voting and can mark their ballots using a pen, using the AutoMARK, or with assistance from someone of their choice (including the judges on the election board). However, voters may not receive assistance from a candidate, employer or union representative when marking their ballot.
