North Dakota GIS Conference 2007: Presentations

Geospatial Technology Applications at UTTC

Presented by: Mike Collins, Tribal Environmental Science Instructor, United Tribes Technical College, Bismarck, North Dakota, VP, NativeView

» Presentation (3.3Mb pdf)

UTTC, one of 37 tribally chartered 1994 Land Grant Institutions nationwide, serves the five tribes in North Dakota. With an enrollment of 1100 students from more than fifty different tribes, as well as approximately 60 non-tribal members, we are growing rapidly. A relatively new program is Tribal Environmental Science. We offer a 2-year Associate of Applied Science degree which includes geospatial technology requirements as well as 8 credit hours of undergraduate research where students must demonstrate effective application of GIS, GPS and Remote Sensing to their environmental research project. GEO 125 - Fundamentals of GPS,GIS, and Remote Sensing is a 3 credit hour course which integrates these three components. A second, intermediate level course is under development to build on the introductory course and provide more application experience. Our CIT and Community Health degree programs have added the introductory course to their course requirements.
