North Dakota GIS Conference 2007: Presentations

GIS Applications in an Agriculture Curriculum

Presented by: Toby Stroh, Asst. Professor; Jeremy Huether, GIS Technician; Megan Baxter and Rusty Makelky, Students, Dickinson State University, Dept. of Agriculture and Technical Studies

» Presentation (2.1Mb pdf)

Dickinson State University's Agriculture students have eagerly utilized GIS in classroom activities, special projects, and for farm use. Students will demonstrate how existing data has been used to develop maps for an Animal Health Emergency Response team, soil inventory to estimate grazing capacity and print maps of their ranches that may be used for farm management or tourism. Additionally students have used GIS in collaborative research projects to evaluate potential locations for animal enterprises, measure feed wastage, evaluate irrigation potential, document vegetation changes, and monitor rangeland. Currently, ESRI's Schematics extension is being used in a pilot project to provide cattle trace back and identify cohorts for food safety and response.
