North Dakota GIS Day 2003: Presentations

SHSND HP-GIS: Digitizing North Dakota's Cultural Heritage One Site at a Time

Presenter: Tim Reed, Research Archeologist
State Historical Society of North Dakota

The Historic Preservation Division of the State Historical Society of North Dakota (SHSND) has been busy incorporating recorded archeological, historical, and architectural sites in North Dakota into a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) format. The HP Division established "HP-GIS", a GIS lab, in the Summer and Fall of 2002. Boundaries of cultural resources represented within the 50,000+ files that comprise the North Dakota Cultural Resource Survey (NDCRS) dataset, (maintained by the HP Division) are being systematically reviewed and digitized county by county. In addition, the Historic Preservation Division Manuscript Collection is also being reviewed and digitized, allowing graphic representations of areas surveyed for cultural resources within the state under compliance with Section 106 Regulations. The combination of these two datasets will allow planners, cultural resource professionals and others to make informed decisions about the potential impact development projects will have upon North Dakota's cultural heritage. This information will also extend our existing capabilities to acquire, display, analyze, and disseminate geospatial data. This project is being undertaken in a cooperative arrangement with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
