StreetMap USA on the ND GIS Hub
ArcSDE comes with a license of StreetMap USA from ESRI. This has been deployed on the Hub database and is available to anyone who can directly connect to the Hub. There are two main methods of geocoding that are briefly described here: Single Addresses for selecting a single address and Bulk Processing for processing numerous addresses.
Single Addresses
» Start up ArcMap
» Click on the Find icon:
![]()
» Click on the Addresses tab then click on the Open Folder icon:

From the list of existing Database Connections, select your normal connection link as if you are opening a Hub database to pull data onto your screen. You can then double click on the connection link or click on it once then click on the Add button in order to see the Address Locators link:

Either double click on the Address Locators link or click on it once then click on the Add button. Once in the Address Locators list, you should see something like:

Double click on the NDHUB.NDHUB_StreetMap link or click on it once then click on the Add button. Once you've done this you'll be returned to the original Find dialog window:

Once you enter in an address then click on the Find button, the dialog will return the results:

Typically, the more info that you enter, the better the match (score) you will get, e.g.,

If you right click on one of the returned items in the list, you will now have a choice of:
» Flash Candidate Location(s)
» Zoom to Candidate(s) and Flash
» Add as Graphic(s) to Map
» Set Bookmark
For example:

Bulk Processing
Check out Tools - Geocoding to do bulk geocoding using tables of existing addresses, converting them to x-y locations:

After clicking on Tools - Geocoding - Geocode Addresses, click on the Add button to select the address locator as shown above.

Once the service is selected, click on the OK button to bring up a window in which you select the table containing the addresses. For example, after selecting the database and table with your address information, your window may look something like:

Specify the output format and location then click on the OK button. Depending on how many addresses you have the geocoding will run for a short period of time, then return with a results window:

On the ArcMap screen you will now see a new layer containing the point locations of the geocoded data.
