ArcMap/ArcView Direct Connect
You will now see your connection, for example in ArcMap (same information in ArcCatalog):
For ease of use and readability, you might want to rename this connection to something more clear. You cannot do this in ArcMap. In ArcCatalog, right click on the connection that you have just made, and select Rename from the menu (or slowly left click, or highlight and press F2). If you wish, you can simply enter your name. If you have multiple ArcSDE connections, you should use a convention such as yourname@connectionname, e.g., jsmith@ndhub. In either case, the connection will have a .sde suffix.
To list the data within the connection, double click the connection. You will see something like the following in ArcMap (similar in ArcCatalog):
The list of items are the feature datasets that contain the feature classes, and the raster images. You can click on one or more of the items in the list, then click the Add button, but this is NOT recommended as you will be loading a lot of data, slowing down your machine. It is better to double click one of the feature datasets, then from that list, select the one or more feature classes (layers) that you would like to add. For example (similar in ArcCatalog):
After selecting one or more layers, click on the Add button. There is information on naming conventions available.
