Current Status

January 12, 2006

Usage of the GIS Hub continues to grow. There are an average 35 or more concurrent connections to the database during the day. There was nearly three terabytes of vector and raster data downloaded during 2005. The web services averaged nearly 72,000 requests per month during 2005.

The OGC WMS service that was originally developed for the National Map thanks to a grant from the U.S.G.S. is now finding wide use from additional users across the country. The GISTC plans to deploy more WMS and possibly WFS as demand dictates.

When not working on state agency-specific work, current work includes improving security for the Hub Explorer applications, enhancing web service monitoring tools, and development of a new Hub Explorer template. There are a number of internal Hub Explorer applications and more are expected which require a logon. The security levels of these applications are being enhanced. An ArcIMS web service monitoring tool has been deployed in a test environment. This monitoring tool will work in conjunction with an existing monitoring tool but is more thorough than the generic tool. A possible alternate to thhe Hub Explorer template that is used for agency applications is being investigated at this time. This tool provides a number of features that we would otherwise have to program ourselves, and it has the added advantage of providing more server-side processing, resulting in bette performance than the existing Hub Explorer.

The 1 meter 2003 statewide mosaic color aerial photography from the NAIP program continues to see big demand. At this writing the 2004 NAIP (2 meter) is approximately 85% loaded. The GISTC plans to purchase the 2005 NAIP (1 meter) once it is released later in the Summer. County mosaics for the 2004 and 2005 NAIP are planned acquisitions. The surficial aquifer compilation is continuing with planned completion sometime this year. The GISTC plans to investigate a road centerline pilot project which involves using all of the best available data sources into a seamless layer. The GISTC also plans to update the Level 1 30-meter DEMs.

The 2005 GIS Users Conference was a great success. More information about the conference, including the Full GISTC meeting can be found by visiting the Users Conference page.

A GIS Initiative Strategic Plan is currently being edited and reviewed. When released, it will be published on this web site, replacing the current Mission and Goals. Although there are many benefits to having the Strategic Plan, the primary purpose is for the GISTC to communicate to all stakeholders what we intend to accomplish into the future and to provide a means to the GISTC for prioritizing our work. This Strategic Plan will also be linked to nationwide initiatives such as the Fifty States Initiative which is meant to be a mechanism to grow the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI).

The GIS Hub infrastructure will undergo a number of upgrades. Soon we will be switching to a new Sun server which houses Oracle and ArcSDE. Sometime in late 2006, most likely we will upgrade from 9.0 to 9.2, once the first service pack for 9.2 has been released and state agency desktop ArcGIS licenses have been upgraded to 9.2.
