Commonly called a high-tech treasure hunt, geocaching has become a very popular sport in over 200 countries since its beginning in 2000. Here in North Dakota there are currently about 150 geocaches placed throughout the state. The main geocaching web site www.geocaching.com provides simple maps showing the location of geocaches and nearby roads, rivers, parks, etc. but these maps have limitations. Geocachers in North Dakota have another option for maps and data. Built for state agencies, the North Dakota GIS Hub provides the public a rich source of data for geocachers looking to build their own customized maps using free software. Maps are useful for helping the geocacher identify the best access to an area, locate parking areas, and optimize the search for multiple geocaches. The GIS Hub provides aerial photographs, contour maps, federal and state lands, roads, railroads, rivers, cultural points, and many other data sets that geocachers can use to plan their next geocaching trip. After learning how to find and use data from the North Dakota GIS Hub, current and future geocachers will find the GIS Hub to be a key tool in their search for treasure in North Dakota.
