6th Annual Upper Red River Valley Crisis Negotiations Conference & Competition

When: June 6th to 8th, 2011

Where: Bismarck State College Campus

Hosted by: North Dakota State Penitentiary Crisis Response Team and Bismarck State College

Guest speakers to include:

Jan Durbina- A 29 year member of the Phoenix AZ Police Department. She has been a negotiator for the Phoenix PD for 19 years and was the primary negotiator during the 2004 prison riot at the Lewis Correctional Facility near Buckeye.

Det./Sgt. Brent Black- Det./Sgt. Black is a member of the Winnipeg, MB Police Services Division and has nearly 30 years of police experience. Winnipeg Crisis Negotiation Unit for five years and has been involved in numerous incidents. He received his Negotiator training through the Canadian Police College in Ottawa. Brent has lectured on negotiation incidents in Winnipeg, and in San Diego, California.

Sgt. Loverne Mathews- Sgt. Mathews has been with the Winnipeg Police Services Division since 1990 and has served with the Winnipeg Crisis Negotiations Unit for five years. She is currently the coordinator for this unit. She has taken part in several high risk incidents involving crisis negotiations and has lectured on negotiation incidents in Winnipeg and San Diego, CA.

Chief Mike Hedlund- Michael Hedlund has been the Chief of Police for East Grand Forks, MN since 2008. Prior to accepting duties in East Grand Forks, Chief Hedlund served with the Grand Forks, ND Police department for 22 years serving as an officer, a sergeant and a lieutenant. While in North Dakota, Chief Hedlund was a P.O.S.T. Certified Instructor (Instructor #1819) in the areas of Traffic Safety, Hostage/Crisis Negotiations, and General Police Topics.

About the Conference: The conference includes a full day of lectures, seminars and case studies on June 6th and is followed by two days of live negotiations competition. This seminar is a must for teams that would like to improve their negotiation skills, improve overall team work and efficiency and network with some of the top crisis negotiators in the region.
