Careers In Corrections: Internship Programs
DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
The field experience or internship program is a cooperative responsibility between the ND Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, various University Systems located throughout the State of North Dakota, and the student. Each component provides the resources necessary to achieve a meaningful experience for the student towards their desired degree.
Each student must assume an active role as an intern with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DOCR). Designated staff within the DOCR will assist the intern in accomplishing designated goals as part of the internship.
The general objectives of the internship within the DOCR are to provide the student an opportunity to engage in actual professional tasks which supplement and complement classroom learning. The field internship will enable the student to assess their own interest and motivation for a career in corrections. It will assist the student in recognizing a sense of professional identification with a firm commitment to service.
As an intern with the ND DOCR the student will have the ability to work with adult and/or juvenile offenders. Interns assist the DOCR, under the guidance of a tenured correctional employee, in the rehabilitation of offenders in either a secure correctional setting or while the offenders is on a conditional release in the community.
The ND Department of Corrections has four secure facilities that house adult and juvenile offenders. There are also district offices throughout the state that manage adult and juvenile offenders.
