The Overflow Unit is a specialized housing area within the physical plant of the North Dakota State Penitentiary. The Overflow unit is primarily designated as transitional housing for inmates that are typically classified with a lower institutional custody score. Most inmates in the Overflow Unit are moving to MRCC, JRCC or a specialized treatment facility. The Overflow Unit is located on the third floor of the administration building and has a capacity of 48 inmates. There are 42 general housing bunks in the dormitory and six cells for disciplinary detention. The Overflow unit is a single floor unit comprised of a dormitory, six disciplinary detention cells, kitchen/dining area, weight room, two TV rooms, laundry room, medication room, and two staff offices.
