Public Assistance Programs

The North Dakota Department of Human Services has a variety of assistance programs to help qualified North Dakotans meet their basic needs. These programs help many low-income families who are working toward self-sufficiency.

Flood Affected Individuals

You Can Apply for Public Assistance Programs

  • If your income has been impacted by spring flooding, you might qualify for public assistance programs. See information below.

Current SNAP Clients May Qualify for Extra Help

  • If already receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Food Stamp) benefits and lost food due to flooding or related power outages, you may be able to get dollar for dollar replacement benefits. But you have to report your loss within 10 DAYS.
  • To Get SNAP Replacement Benefits, You Must:
    • Have a food loss (examples: freezer was in a basement that flooded and contents are destroyed, pantry flooded, power was turned off and contents for refrigerator and/or freezer were destroyed, etc.),
    • Report it to ANY County Social Service office in North Dakota within 10 days of the loss, AND
    • Sign an affidavit

Replacement benefits are issued on the program’s specialized debit card, called an EBT card, and can be used at grocery stores and other retailers to purchase food items only.

  1. What if I need a new EBT card? Individuals with damaged, destroyed, or misplaced EBT cards can obtain replacement cards from any county social service office.
  2. I have questions about my benefits, what do I do? Individuals with questions about their benefits can contact any county social service office or the N.D. Department of Human Services at 800-755-2716.
