The North Dakota Department of Human Services has a variety of assistance programs to help qualified North Dakotans meet their basic needs. These programs help many low-income families who are working toward self-sufficiency.

The department and county social service offices work together to provide economic assistance to qualifying North Dakotans:
- County Social Service Office determine eligibility.
- County staff also assist people with the application process.
- The department issues the assistance:
- Direct payments to qualified providers and vendors of services such as grocery stores, heating oil vendors, and approved child care providers
- Qualifying families with children receive TANF benefit checks directly
