Child Support Enforcement (CSE)
Employers: Payments
Common Errors
Error 5: Employer remits one payment for multiple employees, but identifies only one employee
Problem: When an employer identifies only one employee but is remitting a payment for multiple employees, all of the payment will be applied to the one identified employee's case, instead of all employees' cases. This means that some families will not receive their child support and that some employees will not receive credit for payments that have been taken from their paychecks.
Appropriate Action: Employers must provide a case identifier for each employee when remitting one payment for multiple employees. Case identifiers can be found on the income withholding orders. Also, per state law, employers must specify the amounts attributable to each employee when remitting one payment for multiple employees.
