Adoption Opportunities
In the year 2005, 87% of North Dakota's special needs adoptions were by foster parents who had the children in their care. Adoption is a legal and social process that transfers all parental rights to the adoptive family. Children unable to return home are often placed for adoption. Many are adopted by their foster parents while others are urgently seeking a family.
Adoption agencies are licensed and must meet state laws, regulations and other requirements in placing a child for adoption. North Dakota Licensed Child-Placing Agencies for adoption are:

AASK (Adults Adopting Special Kids)
AASK is North Dakota's special needs adoption program. It is a collaborative effort of Catholic Charities ND, PATH ND, Inc. and the Department of Human Services. Turtle Mountain Child Welfare & Family Services is also affiliated with AASK.
Special needs adoption children may have physical, emotional, or psychological disabilities, may be older children, members of a sibling group being placed together, or are children whose race is a barrier to placement. Most have suffered from neglect, physical, or sexual abuse. All of these children need a loving, permanent family.
The purpose of AASK is the:
- Recruitment and training of families interested in special needs adoption
- Placement of special needs children
- Support services to adoptive parents
