Child Placing Agencies and Department of Human Services to Host Adoption Celebration

November 5, 2004

BISMARCK, N.D. - As the season of giving approaches, some children and families will be gathering with adoption professionals in Fargo on November 10, 2004, to celebrate the gift of love and family. The 2004 Adoption Celebration will be held at the Ramada Plaza Suites and Convention Center beginning at 4 p.m. The event is intended to recognize individuals and families and to remind people of the children in North Dakota who are waiting for families and homes.

"North Dakota has about 15 children waiting to be adopted who do not have identified adoptive families, and many others are in the process of being adopted," said Carol K. Olson, executive director of the N.D. Department of Human Services (DHS). “We hope that the Adoption Celebration and the National Adoption Month 2004 Public Service Campaign will help us reach potential adoptive parents with the message that you do not have to be perfect to be a really terrific parent. We want people to consider adoption because every child deserves a permanent, loving home.”

The doors will open at 3 p.m., and the formal program will begin at 4 p.m. State adoption administrator Julie Hoffman said organizers will present the 2004 Special Needs Adoptive Family of the Year Award and the Adoption Triad Award, which recognizes families involved in an open adoption situation. Adoption advocates will also be honored, and the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute will make a special presentation to North Dakota’s 2004 Angel in Adoption recipient.
