The DVR Self-Employment program clearly identifies a step-by-step process for clients pursuing self-employment under their Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE). These steps are followed by all of our regional office and are meant to move the individual forward in a systematic approach to self-employment and in a manner that will build the opportunity for success.
A key part of the DVR self-employment philosophy is to help the client clearly understand the challenges of self-employment which are the same faced by individuals without disabilities. We also work with clients to identify if the individual has the following traits often associated with successful self-employment outcomes:
- risk-takers
- aggressive
- competitive
- goal-oriented
- opportunistic and
- Initiative
DVR utilizes the Goodman-Herzog Business Assessment Scale (BAS) as a means of identifying self-employment readiness. It is a licensed self-employment assessment tool. It measures aptitude in 5 areas:
- Business Background
- Management Experience
- Technical Skills/Work Experience
- Market Demand
- Personnel Credit/Financial Solvency

DVR works with regional Economic Developers, the Small Business Administration Business Development Centers and the Service Corp of Retired Executives (SCORE) to assist individuals in the development of their business and marketing plans.
DVR has developed two support pieces designed to clarify the DVR self-employment process. A CD-ROM entitled "Planning for Success" is featured on our CD/DVD page. A "Planning for Success" booklet is also available.
