The State Radio Communications section of the N.D. Department of Emergency Services is dedicated to providing professional voice and data communications to federal, state, local and tribal public safety agencies, as well as service to the general public.
The section utilizes twelve major systems to provide up-to-date communications services. These systems include the following:
- State Radio Communications System
- Mobile Data Terminal Communication Systems
- ND Law Enforcement Telecommunications System
- National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (NLETS)
- National Crime Information Center (NCIC)
- National Warning System (NAWAS)
- Statewide Paging System
- Statewide 9-1-1 and Emergency Telephone Systems
- Statewide Roadblock System
- AMBER Alert Response
- Statewide Frequency Coordination System
- Computer Aided Dispatch System
These systems rapidly transmit messages and information to aid law enforcement, emergency medical, fire and emergency management response on a twenty-four hour basis, 365 days per year.
The State Radio Communications System has over 4,000 users representing 287 federal, state, local and tribal agencies. The section's responsibilities also include the following:
- Warn state residents of floods, tornados, blizzards or threats to homeland security;
- AMBER Alert dissemination point providing relevant information to appropriate public safety agencies;
- Coordination and facilitation in development of Geographical Information System (GIS) mapping within North Dakota;
- Coordination and facilitation in development and implementation of 9-1-1 systems within North Dakota; and,
- Statewide backup for 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) in the event of local 9-1-1 PSAP system failures.
State Radio personnel and users of the communications systems are provided with on-going training programs to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of law enforcement and emergency response.
