Bismarck, ND - With potential flooding this spring, now is the time to assess and prepare for flood risk and initiate sheltering plans.
"The likelihood for flooding this spring is relatively high and evacuations for some people are likely," said Greg Wilz, Director of ND Homeland Security. "People who need to evacuate have several options for sheltering: family, friends, hotels and motels and in some cases, public shelters will be available if needed."
Evacuees within a public shelter should:
Cooperate with shelter managers and others staying in the shelter. Living with many people in a confined space can be difficult and unpleasant.
Restrict smoking to designated areas that are well-ventilated. Ensure smoking materials are disposed of safely.
Remember that alcoholic beverages, weapons and pets, except for service animals are prohibited in public shelters.
Bring enough bedding and an ample supply of required medications for your family.
For more information about shelters, please contact your local emergency manager or the ND Department of Emergency Services at 800-472-2121 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
